The Trek Mountain Bike Size Chart You Have Always Needed

Trekking through mountains is no doubt one of the most enjoyable hobbies we could find. Finding a good deal on a mountain bike is always great, but just like a piece of clothing, you won't be having a fun time unless it fits you. But how exactly to choose one for your size? Read on and find out in this article.

Sizing up your moutain bike is important

1. How to choose your trek mountain bike

Measure your height

Your height measurement is the most important when it comes to choosing the right size bike since it affects the frame size and tube angle.

  1. Take off your shoes and stand with your back against a wall.
  2. Make sure your legs are together and your shoulders are back.
  3. Place a pencil on top of your head and mark the wall (the best and easiest way to do this properly is with a friend to help you).
  4. Measure from the floor to the pencil mark you have just made with a tape measure.

Understand the range of reach

For most people, the height alone is enough to get the correct bike frame size. However, if your measurement is on the verge of a size to another, it is best to know your range of reach in order to get a comfortable distance between the handlebars and the saddle.

  1. Stand up straight with your back against a wall.
  2. Lift your arms out horizontally on either side of you.
  3. Measure the distance from the fingertip of one hand to the fingertip of the other. This will give you your arm span.
  4. Subtract your height from this figure to get your range of reach.
  5. If the result is positive (your arm span is greater than your height) you should go for the larger size of bike.
  6. If the result is negative (your arm span is less than your height) you need the smaller size.

Trek mountain bikes size

Trek mountain bikes are measured from the center of the bottom bracket (BB) to the top of the seat tube. To give a rider more stand-over height, the top tubes often slope down and join the seat tube lower than road bikes.

26 inches bike is good for what height?

When people speak of 26 inches bike, it is not about the frame size since it would be huge but the wheel size. A 26 inches wheel size is in fact the least common for mountain bikes. It was the first wheel size for mountain bikes and has lost its popularity ever since. Wheel size does not have much to do with the rider's height but rather the riding style. If you wish for a nimble and flashy style, this size is for you.

Should I buy sizing up or down?

Both have their own merits and once again, it depends on your riding style. If you’re flexible, longer in the torso and like to monster-truck over your terrain rather than flick your way around it, size up your mountain bike. On the other hand, if you like a more nimble and whippy ride, are a bit less flexible, are shorter in the torso, or are looking for a more casual riding position, size down your mountain bike.

Is there a mountain bike wheel size chart?

Not necessarily. There are mainly 3 wheel sizes: 26 inches, 27.5 inches, and 29 inches. Again, your measurement does not have much to do with choosing the wheel size.

  • 26 inches: The original mountain bike wheel size is now the least common. Since these are the smallest and most nimble mountain bike wheels, they are still used on dirt jump and slopestyle bikes that are made for doing BMX-style tricks in the air.
  • 27.5 inches: The better small wheel. This size is faster and rolls over obstacles a lot easier than a 26˝ MTB wheel, but it’s still more nimble than a bigger 29er wheel. This wheel size is a great choice for smaller riders, downhill mountain biking, and some trail riders who prefer to pop off jumps and throw the bike around on the trail.
  • 29 inches: The bigger diameter gives 29˝ wheels the advantage of speed. They also roll over obstacles easier. But when comparing 27.5 vs 29, these bigger wheels take more effort to control. Since these are the fastest-rolling wheels, they’re the best choice for cross-country mountain bike racing.
